US abortions again increased narrowly in 2024, resulting in an estimated 1 million fetuses being killed, according to a new report from the leading Guttmacher Institute.
Guttmacher monthly regulations study We found that abortions increased by less than 1% between 2023 and 2024. 1,038,100 fetuses were killed. In 2023, the United States was considered “the highest number and measured abortion rate measured” in “more than 10 years,” killing an estimated 1,026,690 fetuses, according to the organization.
Guttmacher collects data on surgical and drug abortions offered in brick-and-mortar stores, and abortion pills provided through US telehealth
“Our estimates state-provided abortions represent an underestimation of the total number of abortions nationwide, as they exclude a total ban (through Shield Act provisions, community health networks, online pharmacies, or other means),” the report states.

Guttmacher found that the percentage of women migrating across state boundaries to slightly decrease from 16% to 15%, or around 155,100 women.
“In 2024, 14 states banned abortions entirely, and Florida and Iowa implemented a ban on six weeks of pregnancy. This pregnancy has significantly narrowed down both abortion access options for both of their own residents and more broadly (in Florida’s case) for residents across the region,” according to the report.
The organization said Florida experienced a “sharp decline” in abortions after the six-week restrictions came into effect in May 2024, with 12,100 fewer abortions than in 2023. However, Guttmacher estimated that Virginia saw ingestion of 4,300 “absorbing patients” affected by the six-week limit.
“Virginia is the second state where Florida residents seek abortion after six weeks of pregnancy (and the closest state without a mandatory waiting period), which may be the most convenient option for residents of other states who have traveled to Florida.
South Carolina saw the second-largest decline after Florida, with 3,500 fewer abortions than in 2023, Guttmacher rated. Meanwhile, neighboring North Carolina has seen 16,700 abortions in women outside of state. This was about 36% of the state’s total abortions.
Reports say abortion was the biggest abortion in the state.
The state with the highest number of out-of-state abortions was the same as in 2023.
- Illinois: 35,000 abortions, representing 39% of all abortions in the state
- North Carolina: 16,700 abortions (36% of state abortions)
- Kansas: 16,100 abortions (71% of state abortions)
- New Mexico: 12,800 abortions (69% of state abortions)
Guttmacher found that telemedicine abortions in 2024 increased by 14% without a “total ban” from 10% in 2023.
“Nationwide, the rate of abortions offered via online-only clinics is almost certainly higher than this, as the 14% rate doesn’t include the Shield Act provisions to states that have a total abortion ban (a recent estimated document from the #WeCount Study reported that 34,500 medication abortions were provided through Shield Act to states that had a total ban in early 2024.”
The American Life League, a pro-life organization, responded to these online-only numbers, calling the distribution of abortion drugs “reckless and dangerous.”
“New data released by the Guttmacher Institute confirms what we said in the fall of 2024. “Online-only clinics,” or abortion drug drug cartels, account for 14% of all abortions. “However, in the words of the Pro-Abortion Guttmacher Institute itself, this is only a small part of the number of abortion drugs. The rest is kept quiet due to the Shield’s Law. The true number can be close to 50% or more.
“These tablets continue to cross our country’s borders on life support, taking into account the women and babies involved in them at all,” Brown added. “The reckless and dangerous distribution of these deadly pills is only continuing to rise, as is the case of babies who weren’t given a chance and women killed with these pills, which has to be over.
The continuous increase in abortions comes just a few years after the Supreme Court’s 2022 dobbs The overturned decision Roev. Wade. egg It was a land law for 50 years and essentially created the federal rights of abortion. Since its end, the fight over abortion has mainly returned to individual states, unfolding through state legislatures and voting measures. Despite the rise in abortions, abortion organizations continue to argue that “reproductive rights” are at risk, and are promoting abortions with no restrictions during pregnancy nationwide.
