President Trump vowed to fight for the town of Long Island to preserve the school’s team name and logo after New York state demanded removal because it banned the image of Native Americans.
The Masapequa School Board called for Trump after losing a tooth-nail battle in court for nearly two years.
“I agree with the people of Massapequa on Long Island. They are fighting fiercely to maintain the Massapequa Chiefs logo for the team and school,” Trump said. Posted on Truth Social. The president added that he is asking Linda McMahon to “fight” on behalf of the town.
“After all these years, it’s ridiculous to force them to change their names, and in reality it’s a humiliation to our great Indian population.”
Trump said he is requesting that “virtually everyone in the area” be saved.
In 2023, New York’s Department of Education rebranded all schools that had connections with Native American teams, causing lawsuits from Massa Pekua and many other towns.
Massapequa School Board president Kelly Wachter previously told the Post it would cost about $1 million to rebrand across nine public schools in town.
“It has become the identity of the school. What is wrong with using the name “Chief”? Trump added. “Live the chiefs of Massapequa with this copy of truth!”
