Actor George Clooney expressed indifference to President Trump’s remark referring to him as a “second-movie star” along with other critiques.
Clooney, a well-known Democratic supporter in Hollywood; appeared in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” in March, where he criticized Trump and discussed his Broadway debut.
Following the interview’s broadcast, Trump labeled the two-time Oscar winner a “second movie star” and suggested he should move to television as his film career did not work out.
“I don’t mind. I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time. My role isn’t to appease the US president,” Clooney stated in response to Trump on CBS Morning Monday.
“My responsibility is to seek and confront the truth whenever possible and when there is a chance,” Clooney continued. “I understand people might not appreciate that. There are critics of it.”
Clooney noted that Elon Musk, the head of the Government Efficiency Bureau, has previously criticized him.
“It’s their right to voice that, and I have the right to express the opposing view,” said the actor.
Clooney appeared on both CBS shows promoting his latest play “Goodnight and Good Luck,” which explores the political clash between former Senator Joseph McCarthy and CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow during the 1950s.
In the interview, Clooney commented on the Trump administration’s efforts to limit media influence, expressing concern about the government aiming to diminish journalists.
“Why, now so untrustworthy, 60 Minutes failed for political commentary by showcasing a total of ‘puff pieces’ about the ‘second-rate film’ star George Clooney,” Trump remarked online. “He aggressively supported sleepy Joe’s election and then abandoned him like a dog right after the dispute.”
Trump was alluding to his conflict with CBS after denouncing the network for election interference due to an edited version of an interview with former vice president Kamala Harris last autumn.
He further highlighted Clooney’s backing of former President Biden. Clooney hosted a fundraiser last June just days ahead of the Biden and Trump debate. This prompted Clooney to urge the president to work with him to escape after a drop in ratings.
