Discover the world’s first hydrogen outboard engine-powered boat

Imagine running your boat with clean hydrogen fuel, not gasoline. That’s exactly what we’re working on with Yamaha and Roush Industries and Regulator Marine. They are developing the world’s first hydrogen-burning outdoor engine with the aim of making boats more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

This is part of Yamaha’s big plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, using a mix of electricity, alternative fuels and current hydrogen technology.

Big and big moment: First hydrogen filling

To achieve their goals, a specially modified 26xo boat of the Marines of the regulator was brought to the hydrogen fuel station. The team first filled the tank with hydrogen, which was a major milestone. The 26-foot boat runs on a fine-tuned version of Yamaha’s powerful 450hp XTO outboard engine, but instead of gasoline, it is fueled to gaseous hydrogen.

Matt Van Benschoten of Roush, who is deeply involved in the project, calls it “A Big Moment.” He handled the difficult task of designing and integrating a hydrogen fuel system and made sure everything worked safely and smoothly.

What’s different about this hydrogen ship?

Yamaha started with the XTO 450, the largest offshore outboard, and made some smart changes to handle the hydrogen. Adjust the cylinder head, fuel line, and injectors to operate with the unique properties of hydrogen. However, most engines are still the same as the gasoline version.

The boat itself has been modified to fit three high-pressure hydrogen tanks, each holding fuel at 700 bar (which is a very high pressure). These tanks are designed to expand when they are full, so Yamaha engineers had to come up with a clever installation solution that would allow them to move the tank a little without causing any problems. Although Yamaha has not revealed the gasoline equivalence of hydrogen tanks, it strives to achieve optimal capabilities for marine industrial applications.

First Safety: Smart System onboard

Safety is a major focus here. The boat uses standard hydrogen fueling connectors and follows strict protocols to ensure that filling is safe and efficient. There is even a tank monitoring feedback between the boat and the fuel station, which can monitor the condition of the tank and stop refueling if things get too hot.

Within the boat, multiple hydrogen detectors focus on gas levels. If hydrogen starts to accumulate, the system warns the captain. If it is too high, the engine will shut down and allow gas to pass safely. Additionally, Roush has designed a special ventilation system to ensure that hydrogen leaks escapes from the boat’s highest point, as it is lighter and rises above the air.

Showing out the technology and what’s next

Yamaha first showed off the hydrogen vessel at the Miami Boat Show, then took him to the SEMA show in Las Vegas, where he asked the automotive and marine industries to talk about hydrogen infrastructure. They have built two boats so far. One is for display and the other is for actual testing. Now, the team is focused on tweaking the system, running safety tests and figuring out how far the boat can go with a hydrogen tank. They are also committed to making refueling faster and more convenient.

Issues and possibilities of hydrogen technology

Currently, tanks are cylindrical, taking up a lot of space and limiting how much hydrogen a boat can carry. However, in the future, Yamaha wants to use alternatives to other tanks to integrate more efficiently and fit within the boat’s hull. It is also not easy to find a suitable part for these ultra-high pressure hydrogen systems. The supply chain is still catching up. However, together with partners such as Roush and Regulator Marine, Yamaha is pushing these challenges.

And it doesn’t stop there. Yamaha recently acquired electric inboard manufacturer Torqeedo, showing its seriousness in exploring all sorts of clean marine propulsion technologies.

Ben Special, president of Yamaha’s National Marine Business Unit, told Cyberguy: “The concept in a hydrogen vessel is currently on the water and we are learning more about how to optimize daily performance. Multiple technology solutions are the best way to achieve cleaner products on the water, and hydrogen represents our future performance in our product line, by taking charge of future performance.

Important takeouts for your cart

Yamaha’s hydrogen outdoor project is about rethinking how to run your boat in a safe, practical and sustainable way. There’s still work to do, but this collaboration is making real progress towards clean water and environmentally friendly adventures. Hydrogen can take off by boat, which could change the game across the marine industry.
