Democrats visited Mahmoud Khalil and Lumeisa Ozturk. This is two university students facing deportation as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on anti-Semitism on university campuses.
Mahmoud Khalil, as reported by Breitbart News, is a US non-citizen on the green card and “begins to protest against Israeli counterattack less than a week after Hamas launched its bloody, chaotic, border raid on October 7th.” He also led several radical anti-Israel protests on the Columbia University campus.
Rümeysaöztürk is an F-1 student visa and a 30-year-old Tufts University student and Turkish citizen in the United States. She was detained by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) for supporting the terrorist organisation Hamas and writing an opinion piece calling on the university to “accept the Palestinian massacre.”
“The Democrats who visited the pair included Troy Carter of Louisiana, Benny Thompson of Mississippi, Jim McGovern and Ayana Presley of Massachusetts, and Senators Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts.” It has been reported BBC.
“The visit was to “in support of freedom of speech and let them know that we were standing firm with them,” Carter told reporters after the meeting.” “He said the facility looked ‘clean’ but several detainees complained about the temperature in the cold room. ”
Markey also accused Trump’s White House of sending both Halil and Öztürk to facilities in Louisiana to “circumscribe” their constitutional rights.
As reported by Breitbart News, a federal judge recently ruled that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has legal authority to cancel Halil’s visas after leading a Pro Hamas protest at Columbia University.
“To justify the expulsion, Rubio cited existing laws that allow foreigners to cancel visas held,” the report said.
Mahmoud Khalil recently compared the ICE detention center to a forced Nazi camp.
“I got a copy of Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Weange.” I feel embarrassed to compare my conditions in ice detention with Nazi concentration camps, but some aspects of Frankl’s experience resonate. I wrote it in Washington Post OPED.
