Texas man executed decades after murdering a young mother

A Texas man convicted of brutally killing his young mother and burning her body more than 20 years ago, was executed late Wednesday by a fatal injection.

Moises Sandoval Mendoza, 41, was declared dead at Huntsville State Prison at 6:40 p.m., according to the Associated Press.

Mendoza was convicted in March 2004 of the death of her 20-year-old mother, Rachel O’Neill Tollson, and took her body to the field behind his house where she kept it for several days, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

According to the report, Mendoza reportedly attended a party at the Farmersville home in Tolson, where she and her six-month-old daughter lived a few days before the murder.

On the day of the murder, he suffocated and sexually assaulted his young mother before dragging her into the field and stabbing her in the throat.

After being questioned by police, he drove Tolson’s body into a dirt hole in the countryside of Collin County, Texas, where he burned her body to destroy evidence and buried her under a pile of brushes.

Tolleson’s daughter was found by the child’s grandmother the following day, the AP reported.

Mendoza’s friend warns the police after learning about the crime, and the body was found by Tolson using dental records and they matched.

He later confessed to murder, but his motive remains unknown.

Before the murder, the Attorney General’s Office said Mendoza attacked the woman’s family and sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

A US Supreme Court judge denied the maintenance of Mendoza’s execution and the request for a certiorari warrant petition on Wednesday, and the previous appellate counsel who represented him failed to provide effective counsel as claimed, according to the Texas Coalition to abolish the death penalty (TCADP).

Similarly, on Monday the Texas pardon and parole board rejected a request to pass his death sentence. The board previously refused to encourage tolerance.

TCADP, an advocacy organization aimed at ending the death penalty in Texas, claimed that behind bars over the past 20 years Mendoza had “transformed from impulsive, risk-taking and self-centered adolescence to an empathetic man of faith that positively influences those around him.

According to TCADP, he earned certificates through multiple self-improvement and faith-based programs, maintaining meaningful relationships with his family.
