Vandalism at Georgetown Cupcakes
In a troubling incident, the owners of Georgetown Cupcakes, a well-known bakery in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood, are seeking help from the public to identify a man who vandalized their store. Surveillance footage captured the individual smashing the shop’s front window using a beer keg, an act that occurred late on a Sunday night.
The vandalism took place around 11 p.m. at the intersection of 33rd and M Streets, which is just a few blocks from the Potomac River. The bakery’s owners, sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Catherine Berman, gained fame from their show “DC Cupcakes” that aired from 2010 to 2013. They left corporate careers in finance and fashion to pursue their passion for baking.
In an appeal for assistance, the owners shared video footage that shows a man in a green T-shirt and tan pants walking down the sidewalk with a keg. He can be seen abruptly lifting it above his head and throwing it through the store window, which, frankly, is quite alarming considering employees were inside at the time.
“The employee on site could have been seriously injured,” the owners mentioned in a social media post, linked with the footage.
Those who might have information regarding this suspect are encouraged to contact Metro Police at 202-730-1903. It’s a little unsettling, really, that this kind of behavior seems to be surfacing more frequently nowadays.
Interestingly, the timing of this vandalism coincides with a rise in youth-related incidents in the area. Recently, a group of teens created chaos in a nearby Chipotle, sparking a violent brawl that involved throwing chairs and tables. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has expressed intentions to address these issues, even suggesting consequences for the parents involved.
Moreover, this event unfolded not far from where Secret Service agents had to intervene in a carjacking incident near the home of former President Joe Biden’s granddaughter earlier in 2023. It’s a bit concerning to think about how these incidents could affect community safety and public trust.
In any case, hopefully, someone will recognize the man from the footage, and this unsettling event can be resolved quickly. It’s just unfortunate that businesses—especially beloved local ones—have to deal with such disruptions.
