The editorial board of The Wall Street Journal asserts that China is prevailing in the trade conflict with the US and President Trump, as detailed in its recent article.
“On the positive side, it seems Trump is finally acknowledging reality,” the Journal commented. This was stated in an editorial published on Wednesday. “In the last three weeks, there hasn’t been a more evident market evaluation of the economic ramifications these warnings have indicated. The Media Echo Chamber praised Trump’s tariffs as strategic brilliance.”
The board noted that, in contrast to his initial term, Chinese President Xi Jinping opted for some degree of restraint and later dispatched a delegation for negotiations.
“The crucial question moving forward is whether Trump will absorb these economic and political insights, or if he is simply deferring the trade battle for another occasion,” the Rupert Murdoch-owned publication added. “I doubt even Trump knows the answer because many of his choices are made spontaneously.”
The Journal has consistently criticized Trump for his trade strategies and economic policies in recent weeks, faulting him for the adverse effects on the market during the initial 100 days of his presidency.
The president has dismissed such critiques from the Journal, claiming that the publication is “out of touch” regarding his policies and accusing Murdoch of wanting to “tear him apart.”
The most recent criticism follows Trump’s indication that talks were happening which could significantly lower Beijing’s 145% tariffs. China responded to these assertions on Thursday, labeling them “baseless.”
