Senate Democrat applauds Trump plan to use federal lands for housing

Sen. Reuben Gallego (D-Ariz.) praised President Trump’s plan to use federal land to build affordable public housing across the country.

Gallego, a Wednesday letterpraised the formation of a joint task force on federal land for housing, and encouraged the administration to have a balanced approach to land development that prioritizes environmental management.

The task force was established last month by the Housing and Urban Development Authority (HUD) and the Ministry of Home Affairs to simplify the process of identifying inadequate land to develop residential real estate and using the land to combat the housing crisis.

“Working together, our agencies can acquire inventory of unused federal property and relocate or lease it to a state or region to meet housing needs and assist with the infrastructure needed to make development viable.

The U.S. housing crisis was one of the biggest issues in the 2024 presidential election. National Association of Housing Builders from February Analysis Almost 75% have been found Our households cannot afford a new median home.

“Given these challenges, it is essential to pursue all available measures to reduce the burden of housing costs for families and make home ownership an accessible cornerstone for America’s dreams,” Gallego wrote in a two-page letter.

In a letter to Burgham and Turner, Gallego requested the names of members of the task force.

He also asked whether the initiative’s meeting notes or reports would be made public, how the task force would coordinate with other departments to address “transportation and environment” concerns under development, and what plans would be for them to engage with rural and tribal communities.
