“It’s – I love it, I actually love the concept, but I don’t want it to be used politically against me, especially since I’ve seen people lose elections because of fewer numbers on fake news,” he added.
Asked whether the tax increase for the wealthy people would help cover the costs of campaign proposals, such as slope wages, overtime wages and elimination of taxes on Social Security, Trump reiterated that he “personally doesn’t mind paying more.”
“But this concept may not be generally accepted,” the president said.
Republicans are kicking the idea of a top tax bracket of about 40% for revenues over $1 million in discussions over what the swept-down settlement package GOP lawmakers are crafting. This move is a break in GOP orthodoxness and not everyone in the party is on board.
Raising the highest marginal tax rate from the current level of 37% to 39.6% is roughly the same as returning to the pre-2017 tax laws.
The current 37% highest rate is applicable to households making more than $609,351.
