New Jersey increased the risk of more wildfires on Friday. Just as the giant pine valens flames were finally trapped 60%, burning an area about the size of Newark.
In addition to 10-15 mph south and gusts of 20 mph, the temperatures of humidity and low humidity at nearly 80 degrees make the dry garden condition vulnerable to another large fire. According to the National Weather Service.
“The risk of rapid fires is increasing this afternoon in parts of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania,” the agency warned.
“These conditions could support the rapid spread of fires that ignite along with continuous drying of fine fuels, making them difficult to control quickly,” the NWS added.
In Ocean County, the Pineverens flames are said to have been caused by reckless teenagers, but by Friday around 60% had been contained. According to New Jersey Forest Fire Services.
Since Tuesday, it has torched 15,300 acres of about 24 square miles, and is the size of Newark.
One commercial building was destroyed along with multiple buildings and vehicles. According to the NJFFS, authorities have already begun to assess the total loss.
No injuries have been reported.
Police arrested 19-year-old Ocean Township resident Joseph Kling on Thursday, accusing him of starting a bonfire in the forked wilderness area of River Mountains that exploded when he failed to properly release it.
He was charged with aggravated arson. Kling appeared at his first hearing via video conference Thursday and was ordered to take place at the back of the bar until the detention hearing on April 29th.
