The dishonorable former Democratic governor who attempted a political comeback is to cash out donations from Big Apple’s power brokers, but that’s not Andrew Cuomo.
Former New Jersey Governor Jim McCleavy’s bid for Mayor Jersey City marks another former local governor who is about to return to the political spotlight after resigning amid the scandal.
As Jersey City mayor’s election is considered nonpartisan, Jersey City Councilman James Solomon, an opponent of McGreeve’s campaign, is blowing up McGreevey, who courts former Democrat McGree Magger.
“The Maga Mega Donor, who has poured millions into Donald Trump, is empowering Jim McGreevey’s campaign. It’s time for Jersey City voters to ask a quick question, Solomon told the Post.
McGreevey said he’s courting MAGA Republicans to attract federal dollars to Jersey City if he becomes mayor.
“Over the years I have developed friendships and collaborations with people on both sides of the aisle that respects my work ethic and my ability to get things done,” McGreevey said.
“What’s critical to Jersey City’s future success is its ability to attract federal and state financial support to address infrastructure needs, including sewer and water pipelines, rebuilding schools, rebuilding roads and improving public transport,” he added.
The former New Jersey governor surprised the country by announcing that he had resigned from office in 2004 as he was gay and had an extramarital affair with a man who said his aides had tried to blackmail him for $5 million.
McGreevey has since been out of politics, but now he’s fishing for a comeback similar to Cuomo, who has rejoined his public life throughout Hudson with his current bid for the mayor of New York.
Cuomo resigned as New York governor in August 2021, resigning amid allegations of sexual abuse and other controversy. He denied any misconduct on all of them.
McGreevey has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars from more than 200 donors who supported Maga Republicans, including Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, according to campaign finance filings.
Donors to McGreevey’s mayoral campaign have given Trump and Trump’s PACs more than $3.3 million, according to the Federal Election Commission and the New Jersey Campaign Finance Database.
“While Jim McGreevey’s Trump donor is bathing in Mar Lago, Trump destroys the economy, sends people without legitimate procedures to foreign prisons and attacks working people,” Solomon said. “Jersey City is better than the mayor who sells Jersey City to Trump’s militants and advances his personal quest for power.”
One of McGreevy’s supporters is John Catsimatidis. He has given Republicans millions of dollars for decades. Empire State grocery giants and talk show hosts have consistently supported Trump’s presidential election. Catsimatidis co-chaired Trump’s campaign finance event in 2024.
Metro area funder Kenneth Pasternak charging Another Trump supporter has donated to McGreevey’s mayoral campaign due to fraud by the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission. According to campaign finance filings.
New Jersey Sen. Douglas Steinhardt also donated to McGreevee’s campaign.
McGreevey leads his opponents in race fundraisers. McGreevey has raised $2,176,361 so far, and still has $986,381 in its campaign account. New Jersey Campaign Finance Database.
Solomon raised $838,951 And according to it, I have $613,892 in cash on hand. New Jersey Campaign Finance Database.
The position of Mayor of Jersey City came into being when Mayor Stephen Flop announced that he ran for governor of New Jersey in 2025, rather than seeking a fourth term as mayor.
