California deputies say they have not heard of the fatal golf cart incident in which Denver Broncos legend John Elway reportedly was behind the wheel until two days after it happened.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office said in a press release it had “received information” on Monday regarding the golf cart incident that took place on Saturday at the Madison Club in La Quinta. Officials say longtime Elway friend Jeffrey Sperbeck, 62, fell from the back of a golf cart.
TMZ reported The Elway was driving a golf cart at the time, and the two had left the stage coach afterparty when the incident happened. Elway was reportedly the first person to call 911. Public records show that Elway has the property, a 10-minute drive from the Madison club.
A Cal Fire spokesperson told Fox News Digital that they worked with the Riverside County Fire Department to respond to the incident at 6:50pm. Authorities said Sperbeck suffered “severe injuries” and was taken to a local hospital, initially listed as dangerous, and died Wednesday at Palm Springs' Desert Regional Medical Center.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Madison Club and Elway for comment.

A Cal Fire spokesman said the Riverside County Sheriff's Office was not required to respond to the incident “because it is essentially medical care.”
In a statement, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office said it would “conduct an investigation into Sparbeck's death,” and “will take appropriate action based on the outcome.”
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office did not respond to Fox News Digital when asked why the office didn't ask about the incident until two days later.
Elway made his first public comment on the incident after Sperbeck passed away on Wednesday, according to ESPN.

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the death of my best friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said. “There are no words that truly express the deep sadness I feel in the sudden loss of someone that means so much to me.”
Sperbeck's family also issued a statement after his death.
“We are deeply saddened to share the death of our beloved Jeff Sperbeck. He is a wonderful father, husband, brother, son and friend for many who will be deeply overlooked by everyone,” the Sperbeck family said. “We are grieving this unimaginable loss as a family, along with our beloved friend Elway and many other clients and Jeff.”

Sperbeck's relationship with Elway began in 1990 after becoming manager. Pro Football Hall of Fame Ronnie Lott and Jim Plunkett were also among Sperbeck's clients, but he represents hundreds of NFL players.
Elway led the Broncos to two Super Bowls during his 16 years in the NFL. All of these were in Denver. After quitting the league as a player, he became the Broncos general manager and executive vice president and became a team consultant until March 2023.
