Controversial pizza featuring dill pickles hits grocery store freezers, leaving critics unimpressed.

Controversial pizza toppings are making their way to Target stores near you.

California Pizza Kitchen has just unveiled a new frozen dill pickle pizza, describing it as the “ultimate cheap, hydrophilic pizza combination,” in a recent announcement.

The pizza features genuine dill pickles, rich mozzarella cheese, and dill seasonings, all layered on a creamy garlic sauce over a thin, crispy crust, according to California Pizza Kitchen’s statement.

This frozen pizza will be available at Target locations nationwide for $8.49, starting this month.

Interestingly, it follows another frozen brand that launched a Dill Pickle Pizza earlier this year.

Kauripower, which sells a cauliflower crust version, first introduced dill pickle pizza exclusively at Whole Foods back in February.

The California-based company emphasizes the health benefits of their pizza, noting it contains 14 grams of protein per serving.

Target also offers frozen pickled pizza from its Good & Gather brand.

“We’re constantly on the lookout for exciting flavor ideas to elevate your next pizza experience,” said Michelle Frivka, the brand manager for frozen foods at California Pizza Kitchen.

“As we observe the ongoing and rather controversial pickle trends gaining traction in the culinary scene, we felt it was essential to highlight our commitment to exploring unique flavors with this ‘it’ flavor.”

Pickled pizza is becoming increasingly popular; for example, Domino’s introduced its version in Japan.

Meanwhile, Pizza Hut rolled out a Nashville Hot Chicken Pizza topped with pickles at their New York City location in 2023.

There’s even dill pickle pizza served at the Wisconsin Fair.

X, a 23-year-old food enthusiast who frequently shares grocery finds, expressed disappointment with the dill pickle pizza, stating, “I tried it, and honestly, it had very little pickle flavor.”

Nevertheless, the company holds onto its distinct viewpoint.

“With the tangy crunch of dill pickles, rich mozzarella cheese, and dill resting atop creamy garlic sauce, this is what we are serving up at California Pizza Kitchen frozen.”
