Leading Washington attorney establishes a firm to protect officials pursued by Trump | Donald Trump

A well-known attorney from Washington, who previously defended Hunter Biden against criminal accusations, has established a new law firm aimed at representing former government officials and others affected by the Trump administration.

Abbe Lowell has departed from his large firm Winston & Strawn to create Lowell & Associates. This new firm aims to support clients, including individuals and agencies, who are facing politically motivated investigations, as well as civil and administrative matters, according to a statement released on Friday.

The firm also includes two ex-lawyers from Skadden, ARPS, Slate and Meagher & From, who have stepped back from responding to executive orders issued by Donald Trump that targeted the legal sector.

Skadden is among several companies that have adjusted their operations to sidestep a Republican-led crackdown on legal practices. Meanwhile, four other firms have taken legal action to challenge Trump’s directives.

Former Skadden lawyer Rachel Cohen remarked that these attorneys need to be prepared to confront government overreach.

Additionally, a couple of other lawyers have joined the newly formed firm from Winston & Strawn.

Lowell is also representing New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was introduced to the Justice Department by the Trump administration, with claims suggesting that the administration falsified real estate records. James has denied these allegations.

The firm has stated its commitment to clients who are battling what they term “government efficiency” and the cancellation of federal funding.

Previously, Lowell represented Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, regarding issues related to firearm offenses and tax matters before Biden was granted a pardon in December. His clientele also includes former Senators Bob Menendez, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner.

The establishment of this new firm coincides with broader efforts to confront legal issues tied to the Trump administration.

So far, over 200 lawsuits have been filed against significant Trump policy initiatives, tackling issues like the reduction of rights for transgender individuals and immigrants, as well as the dismantling of various institutions and grants.

This week, Democracy, an advocacy organization that has launched over 50 legal actions since the election, announced the hiring of Brian Netter, a former Mayer Brown partner and a leading attorney during Biden’s time at the Justice Department.

In a statement, Netter emphasized that he is joining the organization during “one of the most pivotal moments in US court history.”
