On Friday, Ohio Sheriff’s deputies overseeing traffic near the University of Cincinnati were struck and killed by a vehicle driven by the father of a teenager who had been shot by police the day before, according to authorities.
The unnamed Hamilton County deputy suffered fatal injuries around 1 p.m. near the university during a graduation ceremony.
While directing traffic at an intersection, the deputy was hit, as Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Tegge explained during a press conference. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center but ultimately passed away there.
Democrats are reintroducing legislation aimed at gun control, targeting offensive weapons.
The deputy, who had recently retired, has not been publicly identified. Sheriff Charmaine McGuffy praised him as “great and dedicated,” expressing her sorrow about the devastating loss.
“I knew him, and I knew just how incredible he was. This is a tremendous loss for all of us,” she shared.
Los Angeles police are seeking to reunite gun owners with their weapons after a catastrophic Palisade fire.
The deputy’s son, just 18 years old, was the individual shot dead by Cincinnati police on Thursday. This son was driving the vehicle that struck the deputy and was also hospitalized following the incident.
During the afternoon ceremony, UC President Neville Pinto requested a moment of silence to honor the fallen officer.
“Before we proceed, unfortunately, I must report on the tragic incident involving Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff on Martin Luther King Drive,” Pinto stated. “It’s a serious matter, and I would like everyone to take a moment of silence in remembrance of this officer.”
An investigation into the deputy’s death is being led by the Cincinnati Police Department.
The teenager who was shot was involved in a brief police chase concerning car thieves that only lasted about six seconds. The officers had responded to a report of a stolen KIA SUV and quickly pursued the vehicle.
One officer chased one suspect, while another officer went after a different suspect.
According to Tegge, one of the suspects was armed with a handgun, which he allegedly pointed at police during the altercation that resulted in the teenager’s death.
Two suspects have been apprehended, while one remains at large.
