The White House intends to cut around 1,200 positions from central intelligence reporting agencies, with other agencies like the National Security Agency also planning to reduce their workforce by the thousands, according to reports from the Washington Post.
Sources familiar with the situation have shared these details with the Associated Press but asked to remain anonymous.
The Trump administration has reportedly discussed the CIA’s impending cuts with Congress. This has been a gradual process over the years, primarily achieved through a reduction in employment rather than outright layoffs, as stated in the Post on Friday. Many of those cuts involve individuals who opted for early retirement.
When asked about the job reductions, the CIA stated that the director, John Ratcliffe, is working to align the agency’s mission with Donald Trump’s national security objectives.
“These changes are part of a broader strategy to invigorate our institutions, create opportunities for emerging leaders, and better position the CIA to accomplish its goals,” the statement said.
A spokesperson for National Intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard didn’t respond immediately to inquiries. Gabbard’s office is responsible for overseeing the coordination of 18 different intelligence agencies.
Earlier this year, the CIA participated in a voluntary redundancy program initiated by Trump, who aims to significantly reduce the federal workforce for greater efficiency. Meanwhile, the NSA has also offered voluntary resignations to some staff members.
Additionally, the CIA plans to terminate an unspecified number of recently hired employees.
The Trump administration has also put an end to the diversity, equity, and inclusion program at the intelligence agency, although a judge has temporarily halted efforts to dismiss 19 employees involved in that program who challenged their termination.
In another significant action, Trump abruptly fired the general leading the NSA and Pentagon cyber command, Tim Howe.
Ratcliffe has expressed intentions to revamp the CIA, emphasizing the need to enhance the use of human sources and to concentrate on issues related to China.
