On Friday, deputies from the Ohio Sheriff’s office, who were managing traffic near the University of Cincinnati, were tragically hit and killed by a vehicle driven by the father of a teenager shot by police just a day earlier.
The officer, whose name has not been released, suffered fatal injuries around 1 PM, right at the university where a graduation ceremony was taking place.
According to Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Tegge, the deputy was directing traffic at the intersection when he was struck.
He was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center but sadly did not survive.
While his identity was not disclosed on Friday, Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffy praised him as “great and dedicated,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “I knew him well; he was incredible,” she added.
The deputy had recently retired, as confirmed by the sheriff.
Authorities revealed that Hinton Jr. was behind the wheel during the incident. He, too, was taken to the hospital.
At the graduation, UC President Neville Pinto requested a moment of silence. “Before we begin, I must report the serious incident involving Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff on Martin Luther King Drive,” he stated. “Let’s take a moment to honor this officer.”
The Cincinnati Police Department is currently investigating the deputy’s death.
Hinton Jr.’s son was shot the previous Thursday during a brief encounter as Cincinnati police pursued four car thieves.
The situation began when officers responded to a report of a stolen KIA SUV from Edgewood, Kentucky, around 9:30 AM. According to reports, the suspects fled when police arrived.
Different officers pursued different suspects, leading to a chaotic six-second confrontation.
During the chase, one suspect allegedly pointed a handgun with an extension magazine at the officer, leading to the fatal shooting of the teenager.
As of now, two suspects have been apprehended, while another remains at large.
