A former budget analyst at the State Department recently admitted guilt for embezzling over $657,000 during her tenure.
Levita Almuutee Ferrer, 64, hailing from Maryland, acknowledged that she misused her signing authority to manipulate the department’s checking account between March 2022 and April 2024.
Ferrer, who is also known as Levita Brezovic, attempted to obscure her actions using QuickBooks, designating herself as the recipient for various transactions.
She often altered the recipient details within QuickBooks to resemble legitimate State Department vendors, making her fraudulent activities harder to detect, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Ferrer has pleaded guilty to theft of government property and is scheduled for sentencing on September 18.
She could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
As part of her plea deal, Ferrer has agreed to repay the stolen funds to the U.S. government and is responsible for determining the specifics regarding forfeiture of the amount involved.
