Trump administration to cut more than 1,000 staff at CIA, intel agencies

The Trump administration is set to lay off over 1,000 employees from the CIA and other intelligence agencies as part of its broader initiative to shrink the federal workforce.

In addition to the CIA, agencies like the National Security Agency are also facing reductions. Reports indicate that more than 1,200 positions will be cut over the coming years, primarily through early retirements and downsizing, as highlighted by the Washington Post.

While a CIA spokesperson didn’t confirm specific numbers, John Ratcliffe, the director of the Intelligence Reporting Agency, emphasized the need for the workforce to align with the administration’s national security goals. He mentioned, “we are moving swiftly to ensure that the CIA workforce meets the administration’s national security priorities.”

In an emailed statement, the spokesperson described these changes as part of a strategy designed to inject new energy into the agency, encouraging emerging leaders and enhancing the CIA’s ability to achieve its mission.

Recent months have already seen staff reductions at the CIA, including the termination of numerous junior executives in early March and buyout offers extended to workers earlier in February.

A controversial decision made in early April received pushback from Representative Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican, as well as National Security Agency head Timothy Howe and his deputy, Wendy Noble.

The exact workforce numbers at the CIA are not publicly available, though estimates suggest it hovers around 22,000.

During discussions with Senators, Ratcliffe assured them about maintaining the integrity of the CIA. “Looking at my track record as DNI, nothing like this has occurred, nor would I ever allow it,” he stated in January, reiterating his commitment to the agency’s stability.
