Trump’s AI Papal Image Sparks Mixed Reactions
On Friday, President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated image of himself dressed in a white papal robe, complete with a cross. He posted it on his social media platform without any caption.
This post seemed to connect to a recent statement he made when asked about who he would like to see as the next Pope. Trump humorously remarked, “I want to be Pope, that’s my number one choice,” though he later added that he didn’t really have a preference. It’s interesting to note he mentioned a cardinal from New York, almost casually.
The Vatican recently announced that the Conclave to elect a new Pope would begin on May 7, following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88.
Responses on social media to Trump’s AI image were quite varied, with some users expressing discontent, especially considering the recent mourning period for Pope Francis. One user stated that they would set aside their grievances due to the period of Novom Diales, but still found Trump’s actions offensive.
Another critic labeled the papal Conclave as a “costume party,” suggesting that Trump’s image turned something solemn into a spectacle.
However, not all responses were negative. Some defenders stepped in, with one user declaring themselves as Poland’s biggest Trump supporter, pointing out that Trump had previously honored Pope John Paul II. They referenced a moment from 1979 when a million people gathered, signifying a pivotal point against communism.
Another social media user humorously claimed that Trump’s antics, including this latest post, are simply his way of trolling, suggesting that it brings some levity to a serious situation.
Additional comments highlighted the mixed feelings around Trump’s humor, with some admiring his boldness and others criticizing the timing. After the Pope’s passing, Trump expressed condolences, saying, “Please rest in peace.” He and First Lady Melania Trump later paid respects at the funeral of a Catholic leader in Rome.
