The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported on Sunday that a ballistic missile launched by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen targeted Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. The military confirmed that attempts were made to intercept the missile, which ultimately landed near the airport.
According to sources from the Israeli defense, the missile impacted an area close to an access road next to the major airport.
While several interception attempts were made, the military acknowledged that “impacts have been identified in the Ben Gurion airport area.”
An investigation is currently underway by the Israeli Air Force Air Defense Array, with the Israeli Airport Authorities confirming the inquiry into the impacts.
At least one person sustained injuries when the missile struck a parking lot at the airport. Footage circulating on social media captured the moment the Houthi missile hit near the airport.
Though there were no major damages reported, airspace was shut down for about an hour, but operations resumed with takeoffs and landings shortly thereafter.
In response, Benny Gantz, a former Israeli minister who resigned last year over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies regarding the conflict, urged the government to hold Iran accountable.
“This is not Yemen. It is Iran launching ballistic missiles at Israel. We must take responsibility,” the former defense minister expressed on social media.
He further urged the Israeli government to acknowledge the situation and insisted that actions against Israel warrant a serious response towards Tehran.
