In a recent interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, President Trump raised some interesting points about the current state of the U.S. border. He questioned whether it would be appropriate to label the border as “the safest” after what he described as mismanagement during the Biden administration. Welker noted that there’s been a decline in border crossings and asked Trump if he thought the border was, in fact, safe. Trump responded with a confident “It’s really safe” before flipping the question back to Welker.
His remarks included a rather pointed observation: “Isn’t it nice to say, after all the chaos caused by an incompetent president, that the border hasn’t been this unsafe in our country’s history?” It’s, well, a striking way to frame the conversation.
When the discussion shifted to Trump’s emergency declaration concerning the border crisis, he reaffirmed his stance, stating that he sees no reason to lift the order just yet. “The border is no longer an emergency,” he told Welker, but then added that many issues are still at play, including thousands of people he wants to remove from the country.
Interestingly, Trump dismissed speculation about a potential third presidential run. “I’m not sure if that’s allowed,” he remarked, though it was clear that pursuing another term isn’t on his agenda now.
The White House celebrated its first 100 days recently, showcasing efforts to tackle illegal immigration. In a morning briefing led by Border Czar Tom Homan, officials discussed new executive orders aimed at improving border enforcement. There was, however, no updated total provided for the number of illegal immigrants deported, despite earlier claims of 100,000 removals by early April.
