Tributes given to ‘cherished’ boy who lost his life in Gateshead industrial estate fire | UK news

The body of a 14-year-old boy, identified as Leighton Kerr, was discovered following a significant fire at Gate Head. His principal described him as “gracious and loved.”

Fourteen children have been apprehended under suspicion of manslaughter linked to Leighton’s death, which occurred in Southsteinside.

Emergency services responded to the fire near Fairfield Industrial Park, where Leighton’s body was found late Friday night.

The tragedy has deeply affected the community at Hebburn General School, where Leighton was a ninth-grade student, according to principal David Thompson.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the tragic loss of one of our students, Leighton Kerr, following the incident on Friday night,” Thompson stated. “Our school community mourns. Leighton was a cherished member of the ninth year, and his absence is greatly felt.”

“As a school, we will come together to support one another through this tragedy. Anyone wishing to pay their respects can leave flowers at the fence in front of the bungalow in memory of Leighton.”

Northumbria police reported that the fourteen children—a mix of 11 boys and 3 girls, aged 11 to 14—were arrested in connection with the tragic incident.

On Sunday evening, a police spokesperson confirmed that all the children had been “released on police bail, with further inquiries ongoing.”

At the industrial park entrance, well-wishers placed flowers, cards, and tributes. One note read: “You were a gentle soul with a kind heart. You will be missed deeply,” while another expressed gratitude for the joy Leighton brought to their lives.

A GoFundMe campaign, organized by a friend’s mother, has raised over £8,000 to assist with funeral expenses.

Authorities received reports of the fire at an industrial site on Southern Bank near the Tyne River shortly after 8 PM Friday.

A police spokesperson conveyed: “Tragically, following a search by Tyne and Northumbria police along with partners, the body of 14-year-old Leighton Kerr was found inside the building.”

Leighton’s next of kin has been informed and is receiving support from professional officers.

The spokesman also emphasized that inquiries are still in the early stages, asking the public to refrain from speculation online or within the community.

DCI Louise Jenkins of Northumbria Police remarked, “This is a very tragic incident where a boy has lost his life. Our thoughts are with Leighton’s family as they cope with this loss.”

She added that officers will continue to provide support to the family and requested that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Vigilance remains a priority as police continue their investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident, with officers on the scene to ensure public safety.
