Former Trump Vice President Mike Pence recognized by the JFK family with a significant award

Boston, Massachusetts – On January 6, 2021, former Vice President Mike Pence was recognized for his actions that went against President Donald Trump. He was awarded the Profile in Courage Award, honoring his refusal to help overturn the 2020 presidential election results and his decision to oversee the Congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.

While accepting the award, Pence reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, “This is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.” He emphasized that his actions on that tumultuous day were guided by his sense of duty and faith.

In a digital interview shortly after the ceremony, Pence expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during his travels across the country over the past few years. At 65, he previously served as Indiana’s governor and was Trump’s running mate during his first term, promoting conservative values throughout their administration.

The events of January 6 marked a turning point. With right-wing extremists storming the Capitol as Congress was set to certify the election results, Pence found himself in a precarious situation. The rioters, fueled by Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud, presented a serious threat. Pence called the attack “tragic” and reaffirmed his commitment to doing what he believed was right, even noting that he and Trump did not have any direct communication that day.

After being advised to evacuate by the Secret Service, Pence chose to remain and fulfill his constitutional duties. He consistently rejected Trump’s insistence that he could unilaterally change the election outcome. Yet, within Trump’s base, there remains resentment towards Pence for his decision, with some labeling him a traitor for not supporting the effort to overturn the election.

Fast forward to June 2023, when Pence launched his own presidential campaign, making him one of the few to challenge Trump in the Republican primaries. He campaigned on traditional conservative values and sought to define a Republican future amidst a rise in populism. Despite some support from anti-Trump factions, Pence struggled with low poll numbers and fundraising, eventually suspending his campaign after just four and a half months.

The Profile in Courage Award, inspired by John F. Kennedy’s book, highlights those who take principled stands despite facing potential backlash. Previous recipients include notable figures like Barack Obama and George H.W. Bush. At the ceremony, Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, commended Pence’s actions on January 6, stating that he “saved America that day.”

Caroline Kennedy, also present at the event, acknowledged their political differences but stressed that true courage is still vital in American politics. Pence humorously noted his minority status as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic setting during his speech.

Despite stepping away from his presidential run, Pence has yet to fully reconcile with Trump, remaining critical of his former running mate while recognizing his recent election victory. The two leaders were seen shaking hands at a funeral service for former President Jimmy Carter, marking their first public interaction since the Capitol riots.

Pence has positioned himself as a rare, vocal critic of Trump within the Republican landscape, addressing issues such as tariffs and foreign policy decisions made during Trump’s presidency. His advocacy for American freedoms has also been evident in his stance on public health policies and appointments made within the government.
