Trump’s complete film tariffs will create major disruptions in the global industry – US politics live | US news

Trump’s Film Tariffs Send “Shock Waves” Through Global Industry

Welcome to a coverage of American politics. Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on films “produced abroad.” According to Screen Producers Australia (SPA), this could send shockwaves throughout various industries.

Matthew Deaner, the CEO of SPA, expressed uncertainty about the implications of this announcement, stating, “At this stage, it is unclear what this announcement actually means or how it will be applied and implemented.” He added that while there are many unknowns, it’s clear that this will have global repercussions.

In the UK, the Bectu Union, which represents workers in the screen industry, described the tariffs as a potential “knockout blow” for a sector still recovering from the impacts of Covid and previous strikes. They urged the UK government to act swiftly to protect this vital industry, emphasizing its importance for national economic interests.

Trump made the announcement on a Sunday night, referring to it as a “national security threat” to the US film sector. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that he had instructed the Commerce Department and the US trade representatives to begin implementing the tariff. However, how this will be enforced remains unclear, particularly regarding whether it will affect domestic or foreign production companies. His post included the claim:

“This is a coordinated effort by other countries and therefore a national security threat. It is a message and propaganda, in addition to everything else!”

“We want movies made in America, again!”
