The Trump administration is set to offer illegal immigrants $1,000 each to voluntarily leave the U.S., with the Department of Homeland Security suggesting that taxpayers could potentially save up to $1 million per family.
Immigrants opting for this program can avoid the risk of arrest by using the CBP Home App. The DHS will cover the cost of their flights out of the country and provide the cash once their departure is confirmed.
Even with this expenditure, the DHS estimates that taxpayers will save 70% more compared to the costs associated with apprehending and deporting each illegal immigrant.
The DHS highlights that it typically costs an average of $17,121 for the government to arrest, detain, and deport a single illegal immigrant.
Stephen Miller, a key adviser to President Trump, mentioned that the potential savings could amount to $1 million per foreign family when considering long-term expenses related to public assistance and welfare.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that “self-deporting is the safest and most cost-effective way” for illegal immigrants to evade arrests.
“Use the CBP Home App now and declare your intent to leave,” Noem urged.
