Judge Delays Trial for Man Charged with Bombing US Warship

Trial Postponed for Al-Qaeda Suspect in 2000 Bombing

The New York Times reported on Monday that the trial of an al-Qaeda suspect linked to the bombing of a US warship has been delayed. Judge Matthew S. Fitzgerald, stationed in Guantanamo Bay, announced that Abd al-Rahim al-Nasiri’s trial is now set for June 1, 2026. This extension aims to provide defense attorneys with additional time to prepare their case.

Al-Nasiri faces accusations of orchestrating the bombing of the USS Cole, which occurred during a refueling stop in Aden, Yemen, in October 2000. Two suicide bombers attacked the destroyer, resulting in the deaths of 17 US Navy personnel and injuries to around 40 others.

Initially, the trial was scheduled to commence on October 6. Al-Nasiri’s legal team has argued that they require more time to possibly negotiate a settlement or reach a plea deal before the trial proceeds.

Anthony J. Natale, a former chief attorney for al-Nasiri, remarked, “It’s irrational at best to believe that everything can be done and can be done right in that time frame,” expressing concerns about the limited resources and time available for defense preparation.

The New York Times noted that Judge Fitzgerald is the fourth judge to handle this case, with several victims’ families having passed away during the lengthy legal proceedings. The bombing was one of the major terrorist incidents targeting the United States prior to the September 11 attacks.

Recently, a court ruling indicated that al-Nasiri’s confession, which was obtained in 2007 while at Guantanamo, would not be permitted in the trial. This statement was deemed inadmissible as it was extracted under torture by the CIA. Other statements made to FBI and Navy Criminal Investigation Services agents shortly after his transfer from a CIA location were also suppressed due to similar reasons.

The Pentagon has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this development.
