Richie Sambora breaks hand and must have surgery.

A broken hand wasn’t enough to stop former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora from performing at the Kentucky Derby this past weekend.

The 65-year-old musician faced a serious injury, reportedly fracturing his hand in two places during an event on Friday. Despite the pain, he managed to take the stage at the Undoubted Kentucky Derby Gala.

As sources shared, “He caught the ball and some guys touched him on the curb. He was completely swollen.” He is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.

Even while dealing with intense discomfort, Sambora performed several classics from Bon Jovi, including “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “It’s My Life,” “I’ll Be There for You,” and “Dead or Alive.”

Someone in attendance remarked, “He killed it. Richie rocked the house. The fans were hooked.” Another noted how, despite his doctor’s concerns about the show, Sambora was determined to play, saying, “Ya! I’m going. It’s a guy like Richie. He’s a man of his word.”

Sambora has been a staple at the Kentucky Derby for over a decade, typically returning for charitable efforts. This year, he raised around $35,000 by auctioning off custom guitars and lessons, contributing to various charities, including one that provides food for underprivileged elementary school students on weekends.

Reflecting on the experience, Sambora expressed his enjoyment, stating, “I had a great gig, and this is my 11th Derby. This is amazing.”

He resides in New Jersey, where he cares for his 89-year-old mother, Joan, who is facing health challenges.

Last year, Sambora revealed that John Bon Jovi had returned to the band after recovering from vocal surgery. However, during a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Bon Jovi noted that there has been no decision yet about Sambora rejoining.

“You’ll never say,” the rocker commented. He acknowledged that Sambora’s absence had lasted more than 11 years due to personal challenges, but he emphasized that there was no animosity between them.

Bon Jovi added, “Since he left, I’ve made four albums. The band continues, do you know? You’ll see when you get to that point on the tour.”
