Some New York Knicks fans expressed disappointment over Spike Lee’s choice to attend the 2025 Met Gala instead of supporting the team during Game 1 of their playoff series against the Celtics in Boston.
Lee, known for his die-hard Knicks fandom, honored the team by donning a custom blue and orange hat featuring their logo while on the red carpet in New York.
Online commentators criticized him, suggesting he wasn’t a genuine supporter of the Knicks. One user remarked, “Did he really choose the Met Gala over the Knicks? This guy claims to be a super fan but skips a playoff game?” They referenced Lee’s attendance at a Liberty playoff game last year and his support for St. John’s basketball.
Another comment read, “Spike Lee prioritizing the Met Gala over the Knicks game is just as bad as when he taunted Reggie Miller.” This referred to a well-known incident during the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals.
Lee attended the gala with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, and they were seen posing for photos at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan.
Witnessing fashion luminaries while the Knicks secured a thrilling 108-105 win, overcoming a 20-point deficit, must have been bittersweet for him. Key players like Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby drove the victory for the Knicks, while Boston struggled, notably missing an NBA playoff record of 45 three-point attempts.

Some fans are now suggesting that Lee should stick to home for Game 2 on Wednesday, fearing his absence could bring bad luck to the team after such a nail-biting win.
It’s uncertain if Lee, a familiar face courtside at Madison Square Garden, will be present for the next game.
