Padres rally to victory against Yankees after Mike Shildt is ejected

The San Diego Padres’ manager, Mike Schilt, lost his cool during a comeback win against the New York Yankees, resulting in his ejection from the game.

Schilt was upset over home plate umpire Adrian Johnson’s call to eject Fernando Tatis Jr. in the eighth inning after he struck out. Tatis had words for the ump as he walked back to the dugout, which led to Schilt erupting from the bench.

The manager expressed his frustrations vehemently, even tossing aside his glasses while arguing with Johnson. “I was not pleased with the decision,” he reflected after the game. “I have dealt with a lot of pressure lately, and I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I felt it was necessary.”

Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts noted that Schilt seemed fired up, recalling, “He came storming down the tunnel, still ready for a confrontation.” This incident marked Schilt’s 15th career ejection.

He commented on his overall record, saying, “I don’t usually get tossed out often. I try to keep our players engaged and respectful towards the umpires, allowing their body of work to speak for itself.”

At the time of the ejection, the Padres were leading 3-0, but Schilt’s erratic behavior seemed to galvanize his team. Yankees reliever Devin Williams soon walked Lewis Arraez, loading the bases with two outs. Luke Weaver then entered, allowing Manny Machado to hit a two-run double followed by a two-run single.

“It fueled me,” said Arraez. “I have a lot of respect for Mike Schilt. Seeing him stand up for us motivated the team.”

Ultimately, the Yankees suffered a 19-16 loss, while the Padres improved their season record to 23-11.
