Pulitzer Prize winner Mosab Abu Toha criticized Israeli hostages online.

The Pulitzer Committee announced on Monday that Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha received the Pulitzer Prize for his essay in The New Yorker, focusing on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Toha has stirred controversy by posting on social media about Israeli hostages, calling them “murderers” and disputing claims of torture faced by detainees under Hamas.

In a post shared with Fox News Digital by Journalism Watchdog Group Honest Reporting, Toha displayed a series of posts that exhibited a pattern of hostility towards Israeli hostages, especially women. In one post from January 24, 2025, he questioned the validity of calling Israeli soldier Emily Damali a hostage, suggesting her proximity to the border indicated otherwise.

Damali, 29, was shot during Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in the loss of two fingers. After being taken by terrorists and confined in Gaza for 471 days, she described her ordeal, highlighting the pain she endured due to inadequate medical care provided by her captors.

In another incident, Agam Berger, an Israeli violinist and former soldier, took part in her sister’s graduation after also being held captive by Hamas. Berger detailed her harrowing experience, where she was forced into a cramped room with inadequate lighting and subjected to attempts at conversion.

Toha has made dubious remarks regarding the fate of young victims, specifically questioning reports that indicated two small boys had been killed by captors. He criticized a BBC report on forensic evidence, labeling it as shameful propaganda.

Despite testimonies from many freed prisoners who described horrific treatment, Toha denied that Israeli hostages showed evidence of torture upon their release. He shared a video implying no signs of mistreatment were apparent among the released hostages.

Former hostage Eli Sharabubi recounted being chained by his captors and losing a significant amount of weight during his imprisonment. Reports also surfaced regarding the treatment of teenage detainees, where they were allegedly coerced into sexual acts.

Toha has accused Israel of bombings that purportedly resulted in mass casualties, including claims tied to attacks on hospitals. However, investigations later suggested that the actual destruction was less severe than initially claimed by Hamas.

As for the Pulitzer Prize, critics have expressed concern over Toha’s inflammatory rhetoric and the appropriateness of awarding him such a prestigious honor. The committee acknowledged the essay’s deep reporting and personal insight into the Palestinian experience of the conflict, despite the ongoing controversies surrounding Toha’s statements and social media behavior.

Efforts to reach the Pulitzer Prize organization, The New Yorker, or Toha for further comments were not successful.
