Cleveland Cavaliers Face Challenges in NBA Playoffs
The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the playoffs as the top seed in the Eastern Conference and had a smooth ride through their first-round matchup against the Miami Heat, sweeping the series.
However, things took a turn in Game 1 of their second-round series against the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers presented a unique challenge, causing some confusion for Cleveland’s head coach, Kenny Atkinson.
Following the match, Atkinson disclosed that Evan Mobley had aggravated an existing ankle injury and that DeAndre Hunter dislocated his thumb. While Atkinson did not label the plays as overly aggressive, he did mention that the physicality coming from the Pacers might have played a role in the injuries.
“Honestly, I don’t think those were dirty plays. But I do feel they crossed a line when it comes to physicality,” he commented.
Atkinson continued to reflect on specific plays, indicating that one particular non-call involving DeAndre’s layup was significant enough to potentially exacerbate his injury.
Meanwhile, Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle remarked that he was trying to watch over his players, acknowledging the physical nature of the game. He also mentioned some missed calls that, in his view, could have made a difference in the game’s outcome.
As the situation developed, ESPN reported just before Game 2 that both Mobley and Hunter would not be playing, and Darius Garland, sidelined during Game 1, was also ruled out.
In Game 2, the Cavaliers were ahead 81-67 against the Pacers in the third quarter, but the absence of key players might weigh heavily on their performance moving forward.
