Mike Pence Critiques Trump’s Views on the Ukraine-Russia Conflict and Trade Tariffs

Pence Critiques Trump on Ukraine Policy and Tariffs

Former Vice President Mike Pence has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s approach to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, particularly focusing on what he calls Trump’s inconsistent support for Ukraine.

Speaking with CNN, Pence expressed his concern that a wavering stance could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stated, “If the last three years teach us anything, then Vladimir Putin doesn’t want peace. He wants Ukraine. I think the shaking support the administration has shown over the past few months has only encouraged Russia.”

Pence emphasized the need for the U.S. to affirm its strong support for Ukraine, warning that otherwise, Putin could potentially invade NATO countries. He referred to an older doctrine from President Reagan, suggesting that if nations are willing to defend themselves, the U.S. should assist them with resources.

His comments came after a recent mineral trade agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine. The U.S. provided Ukraine with access to crucial rare earth minerals necessary for various advanced technologies, including military hardware like F-35 jets and even renewable energy solutions.

In a shift during an interview, Pence also took aim at Trump’s decisions regarding the January 6 Capitol protests, reflecting on the violence that marked that day. He mentioned his disappointment over Trump’s lack of condemnation for the violent actions against law enforcement, thinking, “It had sent the wrong message.”

Pence further criticized Trump’s new tariff policies, labeling them as inflationary and detrimental to consumers. He argued that broad tariffs do not effectively target the countries that have strained trade relations with the U.S. Instead, he suggested a need to reduce trade barriers with allies while maintaining a tough stance against authoritarian regimes.

Strangely, he noted that affordable products are an essential part of the “American Dream.” He shared a personal anecdote about maintaining reasonable prices for his daughters’ and granddaughters’ toys, asserting that consumers will eventually demand a more thoughtful approach to economic policies.
