DHS Under Trump Detains Undocumented Immigrants at Courthouses, Undoing Biden’s Policy

Trump Administration’s DHS Reverses Biden-Era Immigration Policies

President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is retracting policies from the Biden administration that offered protections to undocumented immigrants during court proceedings, effectively creating “protected areas” from federal immigration enforcement.

This week, DHS Executive Director Kristi Noem announced a shift in strategy after previous measures aimed at sheltering illegal immigrants were implemented, emphasizing the importance of arresting undocumented individuals attending court.

“It makes sense for law enforcement to be able to apprehend undocumented immigrants in court for criminal activities,” said DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “They know where to find their targets, which saves valuable resources. It also enhances safety for both officials and the surrounding community, as these individuals are screened for weapons before entering.” Director Noem stated that this approach allows law enforcement to exercise common sense when dealing with illegal immigrants involved in crime.

DHS officials maintain that apprehending undocumented immigrants within court settings is safer, noting that these individuals undergo prior screening for weaponry. Arrests, they argue, have become crucial, especially with a reported 413% increase in attacks against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Among those recently apprehended in or around courthouses is Juan Carlos Baez from Boston, Massachusetts, noted for being arrested outside court due to the city’s sanctuary policies.

Carlos Baez has a prior conviction related to drug trafficking involving cocaine and heroin.

Additionally, ICE agents apprehended Theodoro Dominguez Rodriguez in a Charlottesville, Virginia courthouse. DHS confirmed that Dominguez Rodriguez is a violent offender with multiple assault and battery charges.

Ronaldo David Camacho Catana was also recently arrested in a Philadelphia courthouse. Catana had been taken into custody by local police in January for driving under the influence. Despite being targeted by ICE agents, he was released from detention owing to the city’s sanctuary policies.
