Some Democrats Are Now Moving Away from Progressive Ideas on Tariffs

In a report aired on Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pointed out that some Democrats are moving away from progressive tariff stances, expressing his support for selective tariffs instead of the broader ones promoted by President Donald Trump.

During a discussion with host Brett Baier, he remarked on the unexpected alignment of some Democrats with Trump’s tariff policy, noting that this shift is surprising given the progress these members had previously made. “It’s interesting how some Democrats seem to be abandoning their past advancements,” he stated.

Sanders elaborated, saying, “I believe there isn’t true free trade or no tariffs at all. Some Democrats consider the idea of imposing tariffs in any country irrational. The notion that tariffs can be advantageous for ordinary trade—helping the U.S. economy—is critical. The previous disastrous trade agreements led American businesses to shut down and relocate to Mexico, where they could pay extremely low wages.”
