Trump Mocks Al Green After Primary Loss

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reacted to Rep. Al Green’s loss in the Democratic primary runoff, mocking the congressman by referencing his past behavior during Trump’s speeches to Congress.

Trump posted on social media, congratulating the Democratic Party on Green’s defeat, claiming, “Al Green, one of the most mentally defective members of Congress in our nation’s history, lost his seat in a landslide. But I’ll miss that madman who didn’t scream or wave his cane violently during the next State of the Union. We will make America great again. God Bless America!!!”

Mr. Green, who has been in Congress for over two decades, was defeated by fellow Democratic Rep. Christian Menefee during the Texas 18th Congressional District primary runoff. As per the preliminary vote count released by the Associated Press at 7:33 p.m., Menefee had secured over two-thirds of the votes. With 21,678 votes (68.6 percent), Menefee clearly led, while Green garnered 9,930 votes (31.4 percent).

This runoff occurred after the Texas Republican Party approved a new congressional map that would move much of Green’s political base from the 9th Congressional District into the newly drawn 18th District in 2025. Both Green and Rep. Jasmine Crockett attempted to challenge this map in federal court, while Governor Greg Abbott praised it as a reflection of “the voting preferences of Texans.”

Menefee, a former attorney from Harris County, has focused heavily on immigration issues both during and after his time in Congress. He opposed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit against the Harris County’s $1.35 million deportation defense fund and participated in Democrats’ “shadow hearings” on illegal immigration in March. Additionally, in May, he was part of a delegation visiting the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, accusing ICE of “kidnapping middle-class people.”

In March, both Greene and Menefee were among the 53 House Democrats who voted against a resolution stating that Iran remains the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism.

Green’s defeat follows a series of confrontations with Trump and House Republicans, including an attempt to disrupt a Trump speech in March 2025, which led to Greene being censured by the House. He also promoted various impeachment efforts against Trump, notably following Trump’s actions against Iran’s nuclear facilities in 2025, and was removed from a State of the Union address for protesting with a sign reading “Black people are not apes.”
