Five people, including a suspected Tren de Aragua member, arrested in human smuggling case

Human Smuggling Operation Leads to Multiple Arrests in Texas

Authorities in Texas announced the arrest of five individuals, including a suspected member of the Tren de Aragua gang, as part of a crackdown on human smuggling. This operation, revealed by Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, aims to disrupt networks using established routes to transport up to 15 people into the U.S. each week while evading Border Patrol checkpoints.

The suspects identified for human smuggling are Jose Francisco Bariento Vega, 24, from Mexico; Mary Lou Zura, 49; and Alexis Segundo Olivo Fernandez, 44, from Venezuela. Vega, according to the sheriff, is undocumented in the U.S., while Zura is believed to be a U.S. citizen.

Meanwhile, Fernandez’s alleged involvement with the Tren de Aragua gang has raised flags. Salazar noted that tattoos connected to the gang contributed to these suspicions.

In conjunction with the main arrests, two additional men present at the scene—25-year-old Brandon Suarez and 19-year-old Brian Suarez—were arrested for drug possession. Both are American citizens.

Salazar mentioned that a sixth person, whose identity has not been disclosed, is also suspected of connections to the gang. Although this individual wasn’t arrested at the time of the briefing, the sheriff believes border authorities will pursue him.

The investigation began in April, with the sheriff’s human exploitation force collaborating with Laredo Sector Border Patrol to address human smuggling concerns. Salazar pointed out that this group has ties to larger criminal organizations linked to over $1 million in seized cash.

As the investigation continues, the sheriff indicated that further arrests could follow.
