North Korea Launches Ballistic Missiles, Sparking Concerns
On Thursday, North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, an action that South Korea has labeled as “a clear act of provocation.”
According to Lee Song Joon, a spokesperson for South Korea’s military, these tests might aim to evaluate weapon systems intended for export. North Korea appears to be continuing its military support for Russia, likely bolstering its efforts in the conflict against Ukraine.
The missiles were reportedly fired from locations around Wonsan, a city on North Korea’s eastern coast, between 8:10 AM and 9:20 AM local time. Lee mentioned that the tests probably involved short-range ballistic missiles launched from vehicles similar to the Russian Iskander system, as well as large-caliber rocket systems.
South Korean military officials indicated that around 600 North Korean troops have reportedly died while engaged in combat in Ukraine.
In a recent statement, authorities expressed their condemnation of the missile launches, describing them as clear provocations that threaten regional peace and stability. They’re currently investigating whether these tests are connected to arms exports to Russia.
This series of launches follows a March incident in which North Korea fired several missiles shortly after the start of major joint military exercises by South Korea and the U.S. Together, they reaffirmed their commitment to cooperative defense initiatives in the face of instability.
The U.S. has been monitoring these developments closely. Officials have reiterated their condemnation of North Korea’s provocative actions and have called for restraint.
Recently, North Korea, having denied involvement in the Ukraine conflict for months, confirmed that it had deployed combat troops to aid Russia in reclaiming parts of the Kursk region. In a show of appreciation, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged this support, promising to remember their sacrifices.
A recent intelligence report from South Korea suggests that North Korea may have sent approximately 15,000 soldiers to Russia, with nearly 5,000 reported killed or wounded. Allegations have also emerged that North Korea is providing Russia with various military supplies, including artillery systems and ballistic missiles.
