Kennedy Center criticizes activist artists who are boycotting Trump as ‘shallow and intolerant’

Kennedy Center Responds to Performer Boycotts Against Trump

Richard Grenell, the president of the Kennedy Center, has expressed that performers who choose to boycott President Donald Trump are considered “unwelcome” at the venue. This statement follows the announcement by the cast of “Les Misérables,” who declared they would not participate in Trump’s upcoming appearance next month.

Grenell pushed back against these artists, calling them “intolerant” and criticizing their professionalism. He emphasized, “The Kennedy Center aims to be a neutral space where individuals across the political spectrum can come together and enjoy performances without discussing their voting choices.”

He further stated, “Performers who can’t set aside their personal biases to perform for any audience, regardless of political leanings, are simply not welcome here.” Grenell believes it’s essential to rid the artistic community of intolerant attitudes that could influence hiring practices.

Interestingly, the cast of “Les Misérables” wasn’t the only notable group to express discontent. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of the acclaimed musical “Hamilton,” has also hinted at canceling his performance at the Kennedy Center. He remarked that while he understands the center’s affiliation, it doesn’t resonate with its intended purpose.

Ultimately, Grenell’s comments highlight a desire for the Kennedy Center to remain a non-political institution. He reiterated, “Our goal is to offer a space where diverse viewpoints can coexist, enabling everyone to simply enjoy the art.” The situation continues to unfold, and reactions from other artists and political figures are likely to emerge.
