Wednesday night was quite a night for Mikal Bridges as he wrapped up his first season with the Knicks.
He had his challenges, but it was clear that Leon Rose and the Knicks are committed to acquiring talent, even if it means giving up significant assets like five first-round draft picks. This moves the team forward.
In the first three quarters of Game 2, Bridges worked to shake off a rocky regular season. His final quarter was pivotal, leading the Knicks from a daunting 20-point deficit and making crucial defensive plays. He helped the team secure a stunning 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Celtics.
Bridges has really flipped the narrative of his first season, particularly in this postseason, showcasing a vibrant performance in the team’s colors.
There’s no room for Knicks fans to complain about those draft picks anymore.
“Mikal shines when the stakes are highest,” said Karl-Anthony Towns. Bridges was impressive against the Pistons, scoring 25 points and making a crucial tip-in to even the score in the final minute.
In those first two games against Boston, he truly stepped up during crunch time.
Throughout Game 1, he was instrumental, hitting a key three-pointer and assisting on a dunk while stealing the ball from Jaylen Brown to secure a thrilling victory.
In Game 2, despite a rough start, he scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter and even made a critical steal from Jason Tatum.
After the game, reporters had plenty to ask Bridges, who shared thoughts about his teammates and the belief they all share in each other.
It wasn’t an easy year; Bridges came in with high expectations and didn’t always meet them. Yet the support from the Knicks remained unwavering. Even when he struggled to find his shot in the early parts of Game 2, he managed to keep the team’s hopes alive.
“It’s telling how they keep me mentally strong and moving forward,” he remarked. “Coach Thibodeau trusts me and has confidence in me, especially in those final moments. It’s my teammates, though, who really lift me up.”
This is the vision the Knicks had when they brought Bridges on board—pairing him with Anunoby forms a strong wing duo.
During the regular season, things didn’t go well for them against the Boston Celtics, who dominated their matchups. But so far in the playoffs, the Knicks’ wings have risen to the occasion, contrasting sharply with their regular-season performance.
Bridges and Anunoby have taken their game up a notch, making them real threats.
This season has seen them grow; they’ve had each other’s backs, a sentiment echoed by Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson, who always believed Bridges could come through when it counted. Last week, they were proven right.
“His toughness, grit, and mentality are impressive,” Hart noted. “Even when he’s not scoring, he’s playing big roles offensively and defensively, changing the game’s dynamics.”
