Migrant Arrests at the Southern Border Keep Dropping to New Lows

The Trump administration’s enforcement strategies have led to a significant drop in the number of migrants attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico. In April, the number of encounters decreased by nearly 13% compared to March, and by more than 95% when compared to the same month last year. During the first week of May, agents along the southwest border arrested roughly 270 individuals each day.

“From chaos to control,” stated Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks in a social media post. “In just 100 days, President Trump and Secretary Noem delivered on their commitment to establish the safest border in history.”

Border Patrol agents reported almost 6,300 migrant encounters who crossed illegally in April, according to an unofficial report reviewed by Breitbart Texas. This represents a decline from nearly 184,000 in April 2023 and about 129,000 the previous year.

Even in early May, agents continued to record unusually high numbers of crossings, raising concerns for more than 2,000 immigrants along the border. This reflects a decrease of nearly 93% compared to the same timeframe last year.

Following Donald Trump’s election in November, border agents saw a dramatic reduction in immigrant encounters. For instance, in December, they registered 47,324 encounters, but this figure plummeted to 8,346 by February, shortly after Trump’s inauguration, as reported by Breitbart Texas.

“February showcased the effectiveness of our coordinated efforts to manage border activities,” Chief Banks noted on X. (Note: The numbers mentioned by Banks were later revised in official reports.)

The trend continued with 21,789 arrests made during Trump’s first three months in office—averaging about 244 per day across the entire southwest border. This marks a staggering 95% reduction from the same period last year when more than 407,000 immigrants were apprehended, averaging over 4,500 a day.
