Sen. Reuben Gallego Hints at 2028 Presidential Ambitions
Senator Reuben Gallego from Arizona has left the possibility of a presidential run in 2028 open. In a recent interview, he mentioned that he isn’t currently focused on that prospect, although he noted that the idea has naturally come to mind.
Gallego is generating buzz ahead of his upcoming visit to a Pennsylvania battlefield. Reports from NBC indicate he has received support from donors, organizations, and prominent Democratic figures.
When asked if the thought of running crossed his mind, he acknowledged, “Of course, as an elected official, it crossed my mind,” but also referred to the question as a “land mine.”
He added, “Am I thinking about that now? Definitely not.”
His comments came as he prepares for a City Hall event in Battlegrounds County, Pennsylvania. Like Arizona, Pennsylvania is a swing state that backed Trump in the last election. State Democrats are conducting this event as part of a larger initiative aimed at protecting Medicaid.
This trip has raised eyebrows about his potential candidacy in 2028, especially as Democrats seek a strong leader moving forward. Gallego performed impressively in the 2024 Senate race, surpassing even former Vice President Harris despite facing Trump’s strong support.
He told NBC that the next presidential election feels distant—“it’s not even on my radar.” He also mentioned his wife is expecting their third child, and he aims to focus on both being a senator and a father.
“I need to handle both roles effectively, and those are quite challenging,” he remarked. “Being a father is the hardest job.”
Gallego emphasized the importance of connecting with Pennsylvanians, noting that Democrats need to present a message that resonates with working-class voters in order to win elections.
“I’m the one putting in the hard work, figuring out how to manage expenses like payroll and rent,” he expressed in his NBC interview. “I think people would want to hear from Democrats like me.”
Alongside Gallego, several other names are being floated as potential 2028 Democratic candidates, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
