On Friday, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt dismissed the idea that President Trump has personally profited from his presidency, suggesting reporters instead focus on inquiries regarding his family’s business activities during his term.
With Trump set to travel to the Middle East next week, Leavitt responded to questions about whether his family will accompany him and if he plans to meet with anyone related to his family’s business while there.
“Let me address the foundation of your question that both of you raised, not that I’m aware of. It seems a bit naive to imply everyone here is pursuing their own advantage,” she stated.
Trump and his family have financial interests in the Middle East.
Recently, the Trump organization, which is overseen by Eric Trump, entered into a new real estate and golf course deal in the region just before last week’s presidential trip, with plans for Trump to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
Leavitt countered that despite Forbes estimating Trump’s wealth in the billions, he has actually lost money since assuming office, questioning why the media hasn’t scrutinized whether former President Biden profits from his role.
“The American people re-elected [Trump] because they believe he prioritizes the nation and acts in its best interests. This is someone who lost money by taking on the presidency,” Leavitt explained.
She added, “I don’t recall my predecessor facing similar inquiries about a career politician who likely gains from the office. That’s certainly not the case with President Trump, who maintains high ethical standards in this administration.”
During Friday’s briefing, the first question centered on Trump’s upcoming dinner next month with prominent memecoin investors, an event announced shortly before he took office.
Leavitt maintained that attending the dinner does not pose a conflict of interest.
“The President adheres to all interest conflict laws and has been transparent regarding his financial responsibilities. His success as a businessman may be one of the reasons he was re-elected,” Leavitt remarked.
Reporters pressed Leavitt on whether the potential financial interests of these investors could sway the president’s decisions.
“I assure you, the President will prioritize the American people’s interests and act in the best manner for our country,” she replied.
The event on May 22 at Trump’s golf club near Washington is being promoted as a chance to hear Trump discuss the future of cryptocurrency. The top 25 memecoin holders are also invited to an exclusive reception and a special tour of the White House.
