Daughter surprises her father, a Southwest Airlines captain, on his last flight

Pilot Retires with Emotional Farewell During Final Flight with Daughter

Captain Jim Curtis of Southwest Airlines has marked the end of a remarkable 43-year aviation career, which includes 21 years in the Air Force. He co-piloted his last flight with his daughter, Julia Curtis, who gave an emotional speech to passengers, praising her father as her greatest mentor for teaching her life lessons beyond just flying.

The heartfelt moment gained attention after Julia shared a touching tribute on the airline’s Instagram for Father’s Day. Jim Curtis’s retirement comes after 22 years at Southwest Airlines and a long tenure in the military. Julia attributed her choice to becoming a pilot to her father’s influence and credited him for shaping her character.

Both father and daughter appeared on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ recently, though Jim admitted it was challenging to keep his emotions in check during the heartfelt send-off. He was, apparently, pleasantly surprised to have all three of his children in the carpool on his last day before retiring.

The two discussed the meaning of happiness during the flight, highlighting personal reflections during this significant moment. “I tried to maintain a strict profile for 30 years, but my lips were quivering,” Jim noted about the emotional farewell.

Reflecting on his retirement, he described the experience as “tremendous,” especially after Julia’s unexpected tribute. Generally in aviation, a pilot’s 65th birthday means retirement, often celebrated with one last ceremonial flight. Julia had considered the opportunity to join her father on this special trip for some time.

Julia remarked on the significance of sharing this moment with her dad, saying, “I grew up watching him go to work, but being there with him and expressing how much he means to me was incredibly special.” Jim conveyed excitement about Julia following in his footsteps, mentioning plans to retire to their family farm to grow walnuts with his wife.

Julia credited her father’s teachings, particularly regarding mindset and work ethic, for helping her succeed in her career. “You can control your attitude and effort,” she stated, adding, “If you show up with a positive attitude and work hard, good things will come.”
