A recent internal poll reveals that Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman’s approval ratings are struggling among voters in his own party. Conducted between February 6 and 11, the poll indicates some Democrats are worried about Fetterman’s physical and mental health, following reports from sources close to him.
The poll results seem to coincide with concerns that some Democratic leaders in Pennsylvania are contemplating potential alternatives for his position, looking into the implications of a possible resignation. In Pittsburgh, where Fetterman resides, only 49% of likely Democratic voters view him positively. In stark contrast, Governor Josh Shapiro enjoys a favorable rating of 82% in the same demographic.
Furthermore, the poll shows that 74% of progressive Democrats in Pittsburgh see Fetterman unfavorably, whereas 52% of liberal Democrats still consider him an asset to the party. Interestingly, moderate conservative Democrats in the region appear somewhat more favorable, with 65% rating him positively.
Once perceived as a progressive champion, Fetterman’s stance has evolved over recent years, leading to some confusion about his current alignment. He has attracted criticism for his votes that stray from party alignment, including backing Trump’s Attorney General nominee and opposing certain party initiatives.
His uncompromising stance on issues, like supporting federal detention for illegal immigrants charged with crimes, has stirred controversy. Fetterman has even met with former President Trump, emphasizing his willingness to engage with anyone if it benefits his constituents.
Since taking office in 2022, Fetterman has seen significant staff turnover, which may contribute to an impression of instability. His challenges in leadership and public perception have raised eyebrows, with fellow Democrats voicing concerns about the implications for the party’s future.
News anchor Chris Cuomo recently commented on the situation, suggesting that Fetterman has become a case study in the party’s current struggles. He criticized the Democrats for focusing too heavily on purity tests, implying that this approach has hurt their effectiveness in winning over voters.
In response to the situation, Republican Senator Dave McCormick defended Fetterman against what he termed “disgraceful smears” regarding the senator’s health and personal life, calling for a more civil political discourse. Similarly, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton expressed his support for Fetterman, criticizing attacks on him as dishonorable and noting that their shared values as public servants should outweigh their differences.
Fetterman was elected to the Senate in 2022 and is expected to seek re-election in 2028. However, the political landscape in Pennsylvania remains contentious, with past elections revealing the state as a significant battleground.
As of now, Fetterman’s office has not issued a statement regarding these developments.
