Cardinal Dolan influenced the surprising election of Pope Leo XIV, according to reports.

The Pope’s Conclave Features a Key Player from NYC

Timothy Dolan, the Cardinal of New York, played a significant part in facilitating the rise of Pope Leo XIV, marking him as the first American pope, according to an Italian source.

Dolan, a powerful figure in the Catholic Church, is seen as a “kingmaker” for Cardinal Robert Prevast from Chicago. He has garnered support within the Conclave, especially from English-speaking cardinals hailing from countries of the former British Empire, including India, South Africa, and Illinois. Reports suggest that his influence has been notable.

It was noted that Dolan’s efforts contributed to diminishing the chances for Cardinal Pietro Parolin from Italy during the papal selection process.

The spokesperson for Dolan was unavailable for comment on Friday.

In a more personal interview with FOX5 on Friday, Dolan reflected on his experience in Vatican City. When questioned about the unexpected election of the lesser-known candidate as Pope, he admitted to being as surprised as everyone else.

“I’m still trying to figure it out,” he chuckled.

Dolan shared that prior to the Conclave, discussions among cardinals took place about who might follow St. Peter. His insights indicated that these conversations were fruitful.

“When I arrived on that Wednesday afternoon, it felt like most had a clear idea of who they supported, and it didn’t take long,” he remarked.

Although Dolan expressed that he wasn’t well acquainted with Prebust before arriving in Rome, he recognized the latter’s reputation as an attentive leader.

Interestingly, Dolan recalled needing to admit his unfamiliarity when questioned by other non-U.S. cardinals regarding Prebust’s background.

“I said, ‘So, who is he?'” Dolan shared, noting that Prebust was not considered a prominent figure in the U.S. primarily due to his extensive work as a missionary in Peru.

Ultimately, Pope Leo XIV has roots from the suburbs of Chicago.
