Horse racing: Lingfield Classic trials, Ascot news and more – live

Lingfield Park Racing Update

Good afternoon from Lingfield Park in the Surrey commuter belt. This marks the next leg of the journey toward the prestigious Epsom Classic trials, with a turn of attention to Leopardstown’s Derby Trial card on Sunday.

The Derby Trial set for 3:00 PM has seen just two winners of Epsom Classics crown their careers here this century. Notably, Adayar, the 2021 Derby champion, came in second at this venue. Last year, Ambiente Friendly notably triumphed in this trial but was ultimately bested by the revived City Of Troy, even as a 9-2 second-favorite.

This year, seven competitors will vie for victory, including two contenders from Aidan O’Brien’s stable: Puppet Master and Stay True. Not to forget the intriguing and less-experienced colt from Ralph Beckett’s barn, Prince Of The Seas. Season after season, Beckett has pushed toward the top in British Flat racing, achieving two Oaks victories between 2008 and 2013. However, he has only had four Derby entrants, with a third-place finish from Westover in 2022 being his closest encounter with victory.

In the meantime, the Oaks Trial at 1:15 PM centers around O’Brien’s Giselle, the early favorite at 1-4 with only two other competitors. Already the top choice at 20-1 for the upcoming Oaks, she could attract single-digit odds should she deliver on the hype surrounding her performance.

Across the country today, the Victoria Cup Handicap at Ascot (2:40 PM) is anticipated to be a significant race for those placing bets, with 18 runners having been declared – the smallest field in twenty years. Nevertheless, bookmakers took bets at 6-1 for the field overnight.

Meanwhile, at Haydock, the annual mixed meeting—which features both flat and jump races—will include the Swinton Handicap Hurdle, offering a final run for some capable two-mile handicap hurdlers before the summer break.

With seven race meetings planned across the country and nine races available on the ITV Racing schedule, including insights on yesterday’s Chester Cup card, it’s shaping up to be a busy afternoon. You can catch the main action at Lingfield, Ascot, Haydock, and more through the live blog.
