Trump Announces UK Trade Deal and Prepares for China Talks
President Donald Trump capped off the week by finalizing a significant trade deal with the UK on Thursday. This comes as the administration gears up for trade discussions with China over the weekend.
The specifics of the trade agreement with the UK are still a bit unclear, but it seems to involve maintaining a 10% tariff on British goods while lifting tariffs on imports like steel and cars. Trump emphasized the importance of fair trade relationships, stating, “The agreement has led the UK to join the United States by asserting that mutual relations and fairness are important principles of international trade.” He noted that the deal would open up billions in market access for American exports, especially in agriculture, significantly increasing opportunities for American beef and ethanol.
China Trade Negotiations on the Horizon
As the weekend approaches, Trump is evidently keen to secure a favorable trade agreement with China, especially with talks set to take place in Switzerland on Saturday. He mentioned, “Scott will go to Switzerland and meet with China. They want to do so many deals.” It’s interesting how he pointed out that while discussions might have their theatrics—like worrying over who initiates contact—they truly aim to cultivate constructive agreements.
This week marked a notable moment as it was the first major trade negotiation post his broad tariffs announcement made back on April 2. Following that, on April 9, his administration revealed plans to impose a hefty 145% tariff on Chinese goods, in response to which China escalated tariffs on American products to 125%.
Canadian Relations and Military Investments
During his conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week, Trump reiterated his desire to see Canada as a U.S. state someday, alongside his earlier comments about acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal for security reasons. However, Carney was quick to dismiss such notions, stating, “It’s not on sale.” They discussed the potential for partnerships, emphasizing that Canada is keen to increase its military investments.
Trump remarked that while he acknowledges these security investments, he would “never say” Canada couldn’t become a different province someday. It’s funny how he reflected on past ideas that once seemed outlandish but eventually became possible.
Meeting with Ballet Dancer Released from Russia
In a recent turn of events, Trump also met with Russian-American ballet dancer Xenia Karelina, who was recently freed from a Russian prison. She had faced serious charges but was part of a prisoner swap negotiated by the Trump administration. Karelina expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am very grateful for you bringing me home,” reflecting on her sense of relief and happiness to return to the U.S.
Karelina, who now resides in Los Angeles, was detained in Russia while visiting family in 2024 due to a donation she made to a U.S.-based charity supporting Ukraine.
