Charles Barkley criticizes the NCAA for the current NIL situation, saying it has damaged the sport.

Charles Barkley Critiques NCAA’s NIL and Transfer Portal

Charles Barkley has expressed strong disapproval of the NCAA’s approach to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) management, as well as the transfer portal. During a recent discussion on Outkick, he stated, “The NCAA are a bunch of idiots. They ruined the sport. I don’t know how to put toothpaste back into the tube.”

Barkley, who is 62, emphasizes that while he supports college athletes being compensated, he questions the magnitude of the payments and the frequency with which players can change schools. “The idea that students need to be paid millions to play basketball, only to become free agents each year, seems outrageous. You can’t even do that in the NBA,” he pointed out.

He continues, stating that such a system demands immense financial resources for college programs, which is particularly concerning in basketball, as top talent may only stick around for a brief period. “I’m at a loss about how this provides a return on investment,” he added.

When asked if he would back NIL funding at Auburn, his alma mater, Barkley shared his preference for investing in more impactful causes. “I just donated $10 million to an HBCU and helped establish a new community initiative in Birmingham. That’s much more important to me than supporting collegiate athletics, which I think have lost their way,” he remarked.

Even though he’s contributed to NIL funds at Auburn, Barkley is uncertain about the potential returns. “If you’re giving a kid millions, but he’s only around for a year, how is that sustainable? It’s tough to envision winning a championship with that model,” he concluded.
